Threadripper zen 312/2/2023 ![]() It’s not quite clear what AMD plans for Threadripper, though it sounds like a wider variety of options may be planned? McAfee described AMD’s plans for Threadripper in this way: “As we look at bringing next generation Threadripper to market, reinvigorating choice for end users who may not care about, you know, the absolute maximum maximum configuration of what a Threadripper can do, and just offering a broader range of solutions. So we’re looking at that very carefully.” AMD Zen 3 microarchitecture, Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series processors drive aggregate performance even further, offering a workstation processor. Its most recent iteration, Zen 3, is available across consumer (Ryzen), workstation (Threadripper), and enterprise (EPYC) product families, topping out at 64 cores for the latter two. But I also completely recognize that the changes and just the market dynamics with Threadripper versus Threadripper Pro that have happened over the past year or so as the entire market has just been so, so constrained. “We’re not talking about a timeline for that now. ![]() “So you certainly have seen the the slides that we’ve shared at about our future intent to bring Zen 3 and Zen 4 Threadripper products into the market,” said David McAfee, corporate vice president and general manager of client channel business at AMD, in the Q&A session. …and AMD’s CPU roadmap as of late August. But even so, AMD apparently is reconsidering its commitment to building large, expensive chips containing truckloads of cores. Earlier this summer, when AMD unleashed ultra-pricey DIY Threadripper 5000 Pro parts, it said that that non-Pro Threadripper chips are going the way of the dodo.ĪMD’s Threadripper has evolved into more of an Xeon rival for workstations, rather than a “PC” chip. (3990X, $3,990 - get it?) But the chip neatly fell into a market that usually is somewhat ignored: workstations, where the 64-core Threadripper Pro ended up as a Lenovo exclusive when it debuted in 2020 for $4,599. In 2020, for example, AMD said that its 64-core Threadripper 3990X would carry a $3,990 price tag. Originally created to show off AMD’s ability to sell large, powerful, multicore chips, the simple cost of the processor put them well above what most consumers could afford. The combination of a state-of-the-art architecture and industry-leading 7nm process give the AMD Ryzen™ 5000 Series a +24% generational improvement in energy efficiency, and a stunning 2.8X lead over competing architectures. While consumers have snapped up PCs, even gaming PCs, the reality is that Threadripper is something of an anomaly. Impressively, the performance gains of the "Zen 3" architecture can be delivered with no increase to power consumption or TDP. But that’s not all: processors with "Zen 3," like the AMD Ryzen™ 9 5900X, are the best in the world for PC gaming. Customers upgrading from the AMD Ryzen™ 3000 Series to the 5000 Series can expect an average of 26% better gaming performance at 1080p3. The combination of higher IPC and the unified 8-core complex are a potent combination for PC games. Latency-sensitive tasks like PC gaming especially benefit from this change, as tasks now have direct access to twice as much 元 cache versus "Zen 2." This dramatically reduces core-to-core and core-to-cache latencies by making every element of the die a next-door neighbor with minimal communication time. ![]() These chips will again be supplied with a maximum of 64. ![]() The "Zen 3" architecture transitions to a new "unified complex" design that brings 8 cores and 32MB of 元 cache into a single group of resources. AMD is rumored to launch its upcoming Threadripper 5000 processors with Zen 3 cores in November. This a historically large generational improvement in IPC, and a major player in the architecture’s ability to deliver unmatched single-core performance1. The "Zen 3" architecture can extract an average of 19% additional performance from every MHz of frequency relative to the previous generation2. Over 20 major changes include: wider and more flexible execution resources significantly more load/store bandwidth to feed execution and a streamlined front-end to get more threads in flight-and do it faster. The "Zen 3" architecture represents the most comprehensive design overhaul of the "Zen" era. AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5965WX Zen 3 24Cores/48Threads Processor | 100-000000446WOF ![]()
